It’s a girl’s world online
A new study has found that women make up 58% of all users logging on to popular networking websites.
You see a status update like ‘My life sucks’ or ‘Dinner with my girlieees – yayyy!’ or ‘Love you maa’, and you know it’s estrogen-driven. There are studies that say ‘women historically are the networkers in relationships’ and ‘men were inherently less likely to use social media as a form of expression’.
1x1 polls
No wonder all we ever saw men writing on Facebook or Twitter was about football and cricket teams or their dream sports car, cleverly staying away from all things personal. Here’s what the updating fundas are for the ladies and the guys.
Mera beta first aaya Facebook, as the website says, ‘helps you connect and share with the people in your life’. And the large numbers of women flooding these websites, have taken ‘sharing’ to the next level, often spelling doom for your newsfeeds. What with the aunties on Facebook and their hourly updates on what they are cooking in their palatial homes, how their pooch means the world to them, or announcing their very ‘bright and talented’ child’s A-grades to the world. And as long as it gets ‘likes’ and comments, the fairer sex ain’t holding back.
The first look Simply updating their happenings and posting pictures online isn’t where the line is drawn – we are all familiar with the ‘first look’ of movies and their posters – but a baby’s first look, by mommy dearest or the doting aunt, as it opens its eyes, to the first look as the toddler puts on the ‘cute baby clothes’ for a family function – are all as important and desirable, aren’t they? And then of course, we all know how many pictures girls upload, in multiple model-like poses, on the day they wear that favourite dress or get a new haircut?
Emotional atyachaar While certain statuses and updates are male territory too, when it comes to flaunting on the public forum – new tattoos, for instance – it is mainly the females who tend to share more than the world would be interested in knowing. Haven’t we all seen the overwhelming statuses – be it the over expressing of emotions – ‘Urrrghhhh! Could the day be any worse?’ or ‘My life sucks’, or ‘I like the rain coz it hides my tears’, and then there are the relationship highs and lows – ‘I miss my baby’ and whatnot?

The dudes, die-hard fans Guys, most of them, try and keep it simple. They’d rather express happiness at their favourite football team’s win or the new gadget they just bought. Wait for a Barca encounter, and read the countless tweets and status updates about Lionel Messi and his magic like ‘Go Barca’, ‘Lionel’s gonna make history tonight’, or ‘Messi is like a romantic soccer poem that people want to read again and again’.
Adrenaline junkies An adventure sport trip with friends and not flash it on the web? Doesn’t work for all. While the younger guys are busy following sports stars, the slightly older ones prove their prowess by uploading videos of their heroic jump into the deep sea which they very proudly title ‘The Big Jump’ or ‘On the sea bed’.
